How to Join Pixelfed

Pixelfed is an image-first way of accessing the fediverse. You can read more about what that is and why you might care here.

We’re going to cover up how to sign up a phone, but the interface via a laptop or other computer is virtually identical, so everyone can follow along.

pix.lgbt is a Pixelfed server run by a Jewish trans woman. Like other parts of the fediverse, many sites are run by volunteer teams and supported by donations.

To sign up, go to the https://pix.lgbt/ webpage and click the big signup button on the top right.

The front page of pix.lgbt when not logged in.

Click to signup. It’s first going to ask you to agree to some reasonable rules.

A few basic guidelines including "Don't be a dick. No Nazis. No TERFs. No bigotry. No violence."

When you click to accept this at the bottom of the page, it will ask for your location.

Please select the region you are located in: United States, UK, EU or Other

It then asks for a date of birth. Presumably this is because they want to keep out children.

Enter Your Date of Birth

It goes to today’s date on a calendar widget, but if you click on the year, you won’t have to scroll back for 218+ months.

The calendar widget

You need to decide on a username, enter your email address, pick a password . . .

Account setup

They also want to know why you want an account. If you have an Insta account, tell them about it. The purpose of this steps seems to be not only to prevent spam, but to prevent people who post problematic content from getting in.

I said I was joining to check out the platform and linked to an account I have elsewhere and that was fine.

Briefly explain why you'd like to join.

Then I waited for a few hours until somebody got a chance to look at it. I got a link via email that I was approved and I was in.

It suggested a few people to follow. Of course, you can follow @jaq via this platform, just as you can any Mastodon, Pixelfed, Misskey, etc account from accross the fediverse.

I then posted my first post!

The site works well with a web browser, but there are also a few apps. Picking at random, I tried Pixelix, which seems fine and has been very recently updated.

The user interface of this app is very familiar. Open and scroll up, past the images and videos.

Remember that once you have an account to tell your friends.my Mastodon account and that was fine.
